Highway 16 Overview

In this guide, we focus on the stretch of Texas Highway 16 from Kerrville south to Bandera. This section of the highway is a fantastic route known for its scenic beauty and numerous attractions:

  • North from Kerrville: Travel on Highway 16 to explore Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, Enchanted Rock, Willow Loop, and points further north like Llano.
  • South from Kerrville: Follow Highway 16 to connect with the Three Sisters (Highways 335, 336, and 337) or FM 470, leading to Tarpley and Utopia. For a thrilling ride, take FM 1050 to Leakey—a road known for its exciting twists and turns.

Riding Tips

If you choose to stay on Highway 16, it will take you all the way to Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of Texas. From Bandera, you can continue on 173 South towards Hondo, another enjoyable ride that takes about 30 minutes.

Important Note for New Riders: The southern stretch of Highway 16, starting about 12 miles south of Kerrville, crosses the Medina Mountain. This section is challenging, with tight turns and steep inclines. It is recommended only for experienced riders due to the 15 mph speed limit on sharp curves and potential loose gravel after heavy rains.

  • Koyote Ranch: Located along Highway 16, Koyote Ranch is a biker-friendly stop offering food, beer, gasoline, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s an excellent spot for both rest and refueling, with lodging options available.
  • Medina Cider Mill and Country Store: A charming stop in Medina where you can enjoy coffee, homemade apple pie, and unique apple products. If you’re heading towards Leakey or Vanderpool via 337, refueling here is advisable as there are limited fuel options on the way.
